I hadn’t realized I did so much leisure traveling in 2010 until I sat down, looked at my calendar, and scanned through all my pictures. I was surprised to see that I had been in a different state, or country, every month this past year. It’s such a privilege to be able to travel so easily. My job has allowed me to travel through the country at ease. I’ve become so spoiled that I don’t even get excited when planning a vacation. In the past, I would spend weeks, even months, planning a vacation or a weekend get away but that all changed when I became a Flight Attendant. While most of the world spends countless hours and manpower planning the perfect vacation, I can sit back, relax, and make last minute decisions without having to worry about paying for an expensive airline ticket.
As Matt has learned, you don’t have to be a Flight Attendant to enjoy all the perks – just marry one.
January 2010
Buffalo, NY & Fort Erie, Ontario
At the beginning of the year I had a long layover in Buffalo. I was bored so I decided to walk from the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Buffalo, NY to Fort Erie, Ontario via the Peace Bridge. It was 30 degrees and freezing and at one point during my adventure I didn't think I would make it back. The seven mile walk (roundtrip) was rough on my legs and I could barely walk when I got back to the hotel. I worked that night and ended up in he next day in Washington DC. I didn't get out of bed at all the next day until it was time to leave for the airport. At least I can say I walked from the USA to Canada.
February 2010
Portland, Maine
I was working a trip with a layover in Portland, ME. My friend David caught the flight I was operating from JFK-PWM and we went out that night to a club. The next morning we rented a car and drove all the way down to Ogunquit, ME. We stopped at the Portland Head Lighthouse. It was like being in a Stephen King novel which reminded me of when I stalked Stephen King at the Barnes & Noble in Sarasota, FL.
March 2010
Dallas - Fort Worth, Texas
This was my 5th visit to Dallas. We rented a car and took the 30 minute drive over to Ft. Worth to visit the Stock Yards. There is a lot of history here but if you aren't into cowboy boots, chewing tobacco, or calling your wife, my lady friend, this really isn't the place for you. I have never left Dallas sober and I hoping in 2011 that I can actually leave on Monday morning without being to the point of needing hospitalization.
San Diego & Palm Springs, California
I went on my bi-annual trip to San Diego, I missed the second half of the bi by only visiting in April, to visit Mike. I was reading the book, 1,000 Things To See and Do in the USA Before You die, and one of the things to do and see was the Hotel Del Coronado. We went there and obviously I don't read warnings and directions because I got up on this lifeguard post to have my picture taken. The next day Mike and I drove to Palm Springs and I was able to have my picture taken with Kathy Griffin’s Palm Springs star. We finished off the trip with a tram to the top of a mountain to look down on the desert. We were surrounded by snow while looking down at the desert for as far as the eye could see.
Niagara Falls & Toronto, Ontario, Canada
I finally went to Niagara Falls & Toronto. We had a blast. Toronto is the Canadian city equivalent to Chicago and a must for everyone. There was so much to do we never had a dull moment. We went sightseeing non-stop during the day and non-stop drinking at night. What else can two gay guys ask for?
New York City
I had the opportunity to stay at the Marriott Time Square Marquis for a work function. It was amazing and the view of Time Square was outstanding. Katie Perry performed on the street and we had a bird's eye view of everything. The thousands of people walking up and down the street is not even fathomable when standing among them down in Time Square. This is truly the best view to see the mayhem and excitement that truly is New York City
Omaha, NE, Topeka, KS, Winterset, IA
Working towards my goal of visiting all 50 states before I am 40, I now have 22 months to finish, I visited Topeka, KS, Omaha, NE, and then went to Winterset, IA so I could visit The Bridges of Madison County. Omaha was not as bad as I thought and I spent most of my time there. Vacationing alone has always been exciting to me.
Columbus, Ohio
Matt & I went to Bear Camp in Columbus. I love coffee and I love my name so whenever I find a coffee shop that has anything to do with the name Joe - I have to stock up on coffee cups, water bottles, and t-shirts. It is a sickness that I can't control.
Austin, Texas
Went to Austin, this is my 3rd time, to visit friends and eat some really good food. I actually never even went out to the bar that entire weekend. The first night I was very tired and the second night I was extremely congested. I still had a nice visit and got this great picture out of the entire weekend.
Barcelona, Madrid, & Helsinki
David & I went on our 3rd annual Joe/David vacation. In 2010 we decided to go back to Europe and we had an amazing trip until my iPhone was stolen off the table at dinner on our last night in Barcelona. That set me back a few hours but then we were back to having fun. Watch them Spainards - they can't be trusted!
San Jose, Costa Rica
Matt & I were going to visit Salt Lake City for our birthday weekend. The Southwest flights were full so we came home and within 20 minutes I booked us a weekend in San Jose, Costa Rica. Airfare was $78 for both of us and with my hotel points I paid $11 for a two nights stay. The next time I go to CR I want to get out of San Jose as soon as possible. Very dirty!
Las Vegas, Nevada
I surprised Matt for Christmas this year by bringing him to Las Vegas. The night before we left I gave him instructions on what to do for the following day. When he arrived at the airport I told him we were going to Vegas. He was very excited and the weekend was a success. We didn't win big but giving him this surprise was the jackpot payoff that I was looking for.
I can't wait to see what 2011 brings.
